The electoral college is the way that presidents are selected in the United States. Each state is given a number of electors based on the state’s population.
Addtional Stats & Info:
With the exception of Maine and Nebraska, every state gives all of their electoral votes to the candidate that wins the popular vote in that state, no matter how close the vote. The electoral votes for each candidate are then summed to determine the winner of the election. Thus, even if a president wins the majority of the popular vote, if they do not win the majority of electors, they lose the election.
